ER Visits And Common Ailments

If you follow us on our socials you probably seen we had two visits to the animal ER in the past week or so.

Both Nero and Scarlett had walk in ER visits. These day long stays were to treat a rare case of acute onset polycytemia. This was brought on by what we now believe to have been exposure to and probably ingestion of lime dust. This substance badly irritates the stomach and intestines. It causes the dogs body to react by producing more red blood cells and thickening the blood in their body. Treatment is IV fluids and an antibotic just in case the cause of the polycytemia is caused by an infection.

There is a good chance your dog will never experience polycythemia. It is very likely at some point it will need a vet visit for some other more common ailments.

The most common illnesses in dogs can vary based on factors such as breed, age, and geographic location. However, some of the most frequently encountered canine health issues include:

Ear Infections

Dogs, especially those with floppy ears, are prone to ear infections due to moisture buildup, allergies, or foreign objects. Symptoms often include scratching, head shaking, and discharge.

Gastrointestinal Upset

Issues like vomiting, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal infections are common in dogs. Dietary indiscretion (eating something inappropriate), parasites, or changes in diet can contribute to these problems.

Skin Allergies and Infections

Dogs can develop allergies to various environmental factors, including pollen, dust mites, or certain foods. Allergies often manifest as skin problems, such as itching, redness, hot spots, and secondary skin infections.

It’s important to note that regular veterinary check-ups, proper nutrition, regular exercise, and preventive care can significantly reduce the risk of these and other health issues. If you suspect your dog is ill or showing unusual symptoms, it’s always best to consult with a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment.
