Most people have heard of schnauzers. Some people know there are three versions of schnauzers. I’d venture to say not everyone knows that the three different schnauzers are actually three distinct breeds. All three are recognized and judged at AKC and other dog shows around the world.
Each breed has their own characteristics and activities that they excel in performing. Listed below are the three breeds, their different attributes and what they excel at doing.
1. Miniature Schnauzer
-Smallest of the three breeds
-Developed in Germany in the 19th century as a ratting dog
-Short, wiry coat and a distinct beard and eyebrows
-Very good companion dogs and are highly trainable
-Weigh approximately 11-20 pounds
2. Standard Schnauzer
-Mid-sized of the three breeds
-Originated in Germany in the 14th century
-Double layered coat with a distinct beard and eyebrows- Known for their intelligence and loyalty
-Can be trained as watchdogs and have a natural protective instinct
-Weigh approximately 30-40 pounds
3. Giant Schnauzer
-Largest of the three breeds
-Originated in Germany in the 17th century
-Double-layered coat with a distinct beard and eyebrows
-Strong and muscular build, often used as guard dogs
-Require regular exercise and training to prevent destructive behavior
-Weigh approximately 60-85 pounds
Other Things
-As you can see there is a size schnauzer that can fit into anyone’s lifestyle. Consider this when looking for a pure bred companion.
-These pooches are also hypoallergenic making them great for owners who suffer from athsma or allergies.
A well bred schnauzer of any size when properly cared for should live a healthy life and bring years of companionship to you and your family.
